Summer Blockbusters 2011: To See or Not to See?

For moviegoers around the world, the month of May usually marks the beginning of Hollywood blockbuster season. But all of us in Indonesia should start biting our nails. The mess between the government and the Motion Picture Association has yet to be cleared up, and this means one thing: no Hollywood blockbusters in our cinemas.

Just as a teaser, let’s take a quick look at all the blockbusters we are likely to be missing. And there are some fun movies coming down the pipeline, with an amusing proclivity towards sequels and adaptations

From SFX-heavy epics such as “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” to action flicks like “The Fast and the Furious 5” and “Mission Impossible IV” and rib-ticklers like “Kung Fu Panda 2” and “Hangover 2.”

Then there are at least four comic-book adaptations, three of them from the archives of Marvel Comics, including “Captain America: The First Avenger,” which promises more Marvel-based superheroes battling it out on the silver screen.

And then there is the bloom-and-gloom moment for the wizard-loving crowd, with the franchise finale of the big-screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s epic series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.”

One can’t help but think that such huge titles would have Indonesians flocking to the cinemas — that is, of course, if the whole film import tax saga is resolved in time for the expected release dates.

So far, neither the government, local cinemas nor the MPA has indicated that the movies are coming anytime soon.

Of course, Indonesian movie buffs can always opt for the illegal-yet-pervasive way of doing it, the Rp 7,000-a-piece pirated DVDs. But when it comes to enjoying blockbusters, it’s almost sinful to watch them without a gigantic silver screen, ear-teasing sound system, as well as a box of popcorn and a soda.

So while waiting for something to happen, here’s a complete list of the 2011 summer blockbusters, along with their release date in the United States:
